Four Cities, Three Days

  • Grand Blanc, Michigan
  • Southport, Texas
  • New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Eagle Pass, Texas

Four different cities. Four different states. Until today, they probably have had almost nothing in common. Until today, there has been no connection between them. Now all four are connected because of mass shootings. We can add these to the list of over 320 other mass shootings so far this year.

We don’t know the motives behind these latest attacks, but does it really matter? Maybe they were politically motivated. Maybe they were racially motivated. Maybe the shooters were sexually abused or maybe bullied in school. Does it really matter?

No matter the reasons they are all senseless and evil. In the next few days, we will hear the same cry for more gun control, more police officers, and more education. However, I think it’s time to address the real issue.

It’s time we right the moral compass. We need to return to the days when people knew what was right and wrong, what was good and what was evil. And it’s time we hold people accountable for their wrongdoings. We pushed God into the closet and let Him be forgotten (although when bad things happen, we wonder where He is). We don’t spread the message of the gospel. We do what we want because we believe it only matters what we want; we don’t care about others. We set our own standards for right and wrong according to what is best for us at the moment we are making decisions, what makes us feel good.

This needs to change. Human life means nothing anymore. We go around killing innocent people for what? Because we don’t like their politics? Their skin color? Their sexual orientation? Their religious beliefs? This isn’t the way to change the world.

Change has to come from the bottom. It begins with a strong foundation established through a good home life. It begins with fathers who are involved in their children’s lives. It starts with both parents setting good examples for their children. It continues with the education system enforcing the same strong values that the parents have. This should also include a strong faith life.

Maybe this will only be the beginning, but it’s a start.
