Words Instead of Bullets

For about the last ten years, I have been living under a rock, intentionally, I might add. I used to be quite involved with politics, especially local issues, but something changed, and I just stopped.

I’m trying to remember why. I think it’s because I became disillusioned with the whole process. There came a point where you could no longer have any rational discussion about anything. It was replaced with vitriol and personal attacks rather than making valid points. I suppose it was easier for people to attack rather than actually consider the issue. Things haven’t changed, I think it’s worse as it’s now become more violent.

I stopped watching the news, I stopped listening to talk shows, and I stopped reading blogs and websites. What difference did it make? The few times I did listen, I was scared about the things that were happening. I see our president looking more like a dictator than a president. The previous administration was clueless about what was happening in the world. When will it stop?

When will we come to our senses and realize we can’t survive, at least as the “free” country we were in the past, the one our ancestors fought and died for in many wars? My father was in WW2 and I asked him once if he could go back to 1944 when he joined, would he join again. He said it without hesitation in a minute. I wonder what he would say about things today?

The answer isn’t to attack those who don’t have the same views as you. Just over two weeks ago, a young, conservative activist was shot and killed because he wasn’t afraid to speak out about the issues. I had never heard of him before this (remember I have been under a rock). Charlie Kirk seemed to be a fair and reasonable debater. I’ve watched several videos of him on college campuses, and he has always been kind and respectful of those who have different opinions on the issues from him.

Instead of shooting people, how about we try to talk to them? Maybe persuade them with words instead of bullets. It would undoubtedly be safer.
